About Alan
Welcome to my website! This website is an excellent collection of all my works from journalism to artistic. Although my current career has nothing to do with what you find here, my profession will always remain in journalism and graphic design.
Journalism
I began writing at a very early age, probablly before I could even tie my own shoes. I won my first award for a short story I wrote in the third grade. By Junior High, I was in Journalism classes all the way through High School (so about six years).
During my enlistment in the Navy, I worked briefly on the Ships newspaper (which was a one person deal) and declined to go to Journalist "A" school because I wanted to leave the Fleet (my enlistment was ending quickly).
After the Navy I wrote articles infrequently, however my goal was always to continue in that profession. Unfortunatley that never materialized. I began to enter the world of technical writing when I produced several study and training manuals for my local Sam's Club. The manuals were so good, several other clubs in our region began using them. Also during this time I produced three editions of a newsletter for our Sam's Club for associates only.
This was also a time when I wrote press releases and a few newsletters (all of my own design as well) for the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) International Union.
In the present, I'm making a comback...in an electronic sort of way. I plan on writing quality articles that fill particular niche audiences. For instance, I've written a few articles on Ovarian Cancer to help those facing this disease have a more informed discussion with their physician about other options. I will also be producing traditional journalism reporting with articles, video, and Twitter.
Graphic Design
My artistic roots go far back to about the same time I began writing. Looking back, they seemed to be pointing to me writing and desigining manuals (I remember the first 'manual' I wrote for a club we had as kids).
I've produced throughout my life various pieces of graphic design on various mediums. For instance, while I was in the Navy I produced a instructional poster on how a laundry slip should be filled out using the form, an old typewriter, and a copy machine.
Since then, I've used various software, such as Microsoft Publisher and PhotoDraw, to produce high end publications and graphics from signs to logos, I've done it.
Today I'm working on finishing my degree in Graphic Design where I'm learning how to use Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash, and more.
