On Tuesday night Ted Koppel of ABC News reported from the Congo in his story called "Heart of Darkness".  He showed all the world what has happened to innocent women in this war ravaged country.

Worldwide relief agencies helped get him and his film crew in on a Russian built cargo aircraft carrying supplies in one of the brief 'security' windows the current Government allowed.  We met up with an Italian priest who is doing his best to help a small town that most people have never heard of.

The most fascinating and disturbing stories, however, came from the local women who told Ted how they were raped in front of their children and husbands.   Without hesitation they told their stories of how the soldiers raped them and girls as young as 11.

"This is how you were made and now I'm raping your mother" said a soldier to terrified children who had to witness these acts against their own mothers.

The strength and courage these women displayed on the broadcast only goes to reinforce the fact the not enough is being done for women's rights and protection in developing and poor countries.  The UN, who gets a bad rap from most people, is actually doing all it can with such a limited budget.  Maybe it's time we help them help those who are in need.
